Dr Mathilde Pavis is an expert in intellectual property law, ethics and new technologies.

Mathilde has 10+ years experience in research and training. Her work has been cited by the UK Parliament to inform new laws on artificial intelligence. Mathilde now advises governments, organisations and businesses about the impact of AI on intellectual property and sensitive data.

Mathilde has received over half-a-million pounds in grants to fund her research on the synthetisation of humans and the digitisation of sensitive data. With her most recent grant, Mathilde co-founded the UK’s first pro bono law and digitisation clinic designed to support cultural institutions (GLAM-E Lab).

Mathilde writes for The Times and The Independent about law in new technologies, and has appeared on national programs for Channel 4 News and BBC Radio 4 to discuss AI regulations. She has written 50+ academic and online publications.

Dr Mathilde trained in Law in France and in the United Kingdom (Licence/LLB, Maitrise, LLM). She completed her PhD on the legal protection of individuals’ face, voice and body online at the University of Exeter (2013-2016). Her PhD research spotted a gap in the law on the protection of individuals against unauthorised digital imitations. She has held prestigious academic positions in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia in recognition of the ground-breaking nature of her work.

Mathilde held a personal chair at the University of Exeter and the University of Reading (Associate Professor). She now co-directs the Synthetic Research Media Network at the University of Reading where she holds a senior visiting research fellowship.
